Lime sulfur use tips

Lime-sulfur compound is widely used as a special-effect agent for managing defoliation in fruit trees, as well as controlling diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, ring rot, pear rust, flower rot, and various pests. However, its effectiveness against eggs is limited. For instance, when using lime sulfur alone to control apple spider mites, the population reduction rates were 87% at week 1, 85% at week 2, and only 39% at week 7. With the new method, the reduction rates improved dramatically, reaching 99.9% to 100% at weeks 1, 2, and 7 respectively. The updated approach involves mixing 0.5% Bordeaux mixture (lithosulfide) with 0.5% detergent and 0.4% salt. All ingredients should be fully dissolved before combining them. The solution should be thoroughly mixed and applied by spraying both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves for optimal results. This method has proven to be far more effective than traditional lime sulfur application, especially when targeting pest eggs that are often resistant to standard treatments. By improving the formulation and application technique, growers can achieve better long-term control of mite infestations and reduce the need for repeated treatments.
