Analysis and Detection of Quality Factors of Virtual Welding Strength and Barrier Performance of Multi-chamber Bags

Multi-chamber infusion soft bags are currently categorized into two main types in the large-scale infusion industry: liquid-liquid multi-chamber bags and powder-liquid multi-chamber bags. These products are designed to contain different infusion drugs within a single package, separated by virtual welding between chambers. During production, storage, and transportation, the contents remain isolated. In clinical practice, the virtual weld is opened using external force, allowing the components to mix. Once mixed, the resulting product is typically unstable and cannot be stored for long periods, requiring immediate preparation for use. This paper focuses on two critical quality factors of multi-chamber infusion soft bags: the performance of the virtual welding and the barrier properties. The strength of the virtual weld must be carefully controlled to ensure both safe handling during transport and ease of use in clinical settings. If the weld is too weak, it may fail during transit; if it's too strong, it could make opening difficult for medical staff. The key parameters influencing the virtual sealing process include temperature, time, and pressure. To maintain optimal performance, manufacturers often conduct extensive testing using specialized equipment such as Labthink’s HST-H3 heat seal tester and XLW (PC) intelligent electronic tensile tester. These tools help measure the heat-seal strength of the welds and optimize the sealing parameters for better performance. In addition to welding strength, the barrier properties of the bag play a crucial role in maintaining drug stability. Both liquid-liquid and powder-liquid multi-chamber bags require effective barriers against oxygen and moisture penetration. This is especially important when the product comes into contact with the internal packaging. To enhance protection, nitrogen displacement packaging machines are used during production to replace air inside the bag. As part of the barrier property testing, parameters such as oxygen permeability, nitrogen permeability, and water vapor transmission rate are measured. Labthink’s VAC-V series of differential pressure gas permeameters are commonly used for these assessments. The application of multi-chamber infusion bags represents a significant advancement in the functionality of infusion soft bags. As a critical component of pharmaceutical packaging, they must meet strict quality standards. Key testing parameters include tensile strength, elongation, heat-seal strength, film puncture resistance, rubber stopper puncture force, and overall sealing performance. Labthink has been a trusted provider of testing instruments and services for the global pharmaceutical industry for many years. We aim to expand our collaboration with pharmaceutical companies and research institutions to support continuous quality improvement. For more information, please contact Guo Sijia at gz@.
