Wheat lodging is a major challenge that affects wheat yield, especially under conditions of high fertilizer and water application. To mitigate this issue, farmers often use plant growth regulators such as paclobutrazol, uniconazole, chlormequat, and auxin. These chemicals help strengthen the plant structure, reduce stem elongation, and ultimately improve resistance to lodging.
Paclobutrazol is commonly used at a concentration of 200 ppm (parts per million), with 30 kg of solution applied per mu during the growing season. This treatment results in shorter, more compact plants, which enhances their ability to resist lodging. It also improves nitrogen uptake and utilization, contributing to better overall plant health and productivity.
Uniconazole, available as a 5% wettable powder, has significantly higher biological activity compared to paclobutrazol—up to 6 to 10 times more effective. It is typically applied one week before the jointing stage, using 1 kg of a 30–40 ppm solution per mu. This helps prevent lodging, increase grain weight, and reduce the number of sterile spikelets, leading to better yields.
Chlormequat is particularly useful for large and dense wheat fields. Applying a 0.1 to 0.3% solution at a rate of 50 to 75 kg per acre during the early jointing stage can effectively inhibit internode elongation. This makes the plants shorter, with thicker and stronger stems, reducing the risk of lodging. When mixed with 2,4-D butyl ester, it can also control broadleaf weeds, providing dual benefits.
During the jointing stage, applying 15–20 ml of melatonin per mu, mixed with 50–60 kg of water, helps prevent excessive internode growth and reduces the likelihood of late-season lodging. This method is gaining popularity due to its effectiveness and ease of application.
By using these growth regulators strategically, farmers can optimize wheat growth, enhance structural integrity, and maximize yield potential, even under intensive management practices.
