Feeding habits of scorpions

Scorpions share a common dietary preference, primarily feeding on soft and juicy prey such as mealworms, earthworms, cockroaches, rats, and crickets. While they can also consume fresh meat from larger animals, live insects are still their preferred food source. In cases of food scarcity, they can be supplemented with alternative options. However, it's important to provide high-protein, low-fat diets to avoid limb hypertrophy caused by excessive fat intake. Scorpions capture their prey using saliva that contains digestive enzymes. Once the prey is immobilized, the scorpion uses its pincers to hold it near its mouth. The prey is then torn apart with its movable limbs, and the saliva is regurgitated to break down the flesh into a liquid form, which is then sucked up. When temperatures exceed 30°C, baby scorpions typically take 10 to 13 days to feed. Young insects like Tenebrio molitor and earthworms are commonly consumed during this time. Adult scorpions usually eat every 3 to 5 days and can consume up to three large mealworms in one sitting. Different life stages have varying feeding behaviors; for instance, females that have recently given birth tend to have a higher appetite, as do those that have been separated from their mother. On average, they can consume food equal to their body weight in one meal. Tenebrio larvae are often used as a primary food source due to their ease of availability and survival in captivity. Depending on the size of the scorpions, different larval stages are provided. Most scorpions feed in the evening, typically between dusk and 11 PM, which is considered their peak feeding time. Scorpions are known to exhibit cannibalistic behavior, often triggered by food shortages, dehydration, or overcrowding. To prevent this, it's crucial to ensure adequate food supply, maintain proper humidity, and provide multiple hiding spots. During active periods, scorpions should be kept dispersed to facilitate feeding, molting, mating, and reproduction. Scorpions have an impressive ability to survive without food for extended periods. This is due to their naturally timid nature, sensitivity to light, poor eyesight, slow movements, and limited hunting skills. As a result, they have evolved to remain constantly hungry. Under normal conditions, they may only need to eat once or five times a day. After a meal, they can go more than ten days without eating. In artificial rearing environments, scorpions can survive up to four to five months without food or water, though they will not grow or develop properly under these conditions.
