Adding sugar and ginger meat pigeons can resist cold

Although the winter weather is cold, meat pigeons have a strong resistance to cold. However, low temperatures can still significantly affect their growth, reproduction, and overall health. Based on years of practical experience, the author recommends that farmers take the following measures to properly care for pigeons during the winter season: In terms of feeding, the cold weather increases the energy consumption of pigeons. Therefore, it's essential to increase the amount of energy-rich feed, such as corn, and also raise the crude protein content in their diet. Feeding should be increased compared to other seasons, with an extra meal preferably at night. Health sand is just as important as regular feed and should not be given all at once. When feeding, it's important to consistently add fresh health sand and mix in the best amount of red sugar or ginger, which can effectively enhance the pigeons’ ability to stay warm and resist colds. The composition of meat pigeon health sand includes: 30% sand (1-2mm in diameter), 10% red clay, 30% shell powder, 10%-15% bone meal, 3% salt, 4% charcoal, 5% slaked lime and gypsum, and additives such as iron (0.5%), trace elements (1%), gentian (1%), licorice (1.5%), andrographolide (1%), and vitamin E (1%). Each pair of pigeons should receive about 3-18 grams of health sand per day. It’s advisable for pigeon keepers to prepare medium sand, red clay, shell powder, and bone meal in advance. Other ingredients, especially the additives, should be used freshly to avoid interactions or loss of potency. Some herbal ingredients can be adjusted based on the specific health conditions of the pigeons. In terms of management, insulation is crucial. Make sure doors and windows are tightly closed to prevent cold drafts. However, it's important to remember that sealing the space too much can lead to poor air quality. On sunny days when the temperature is higher, it's recommended to open the windows for 10-15 minutes each time to allow fresh air in. For heating, increasing the lighting or using a heater on cloudy or dark days can help maintain warmth in the coop. A small fire or wall heater can also be installed to provide additional warmth. Regarding disease prevention, the high concentration of harmful gases like ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in the cages can easily lead to respiratory issues, cholera, and enteritis in meat pigeons. It's essential to maintain good hygiene both inside and outside the house. Internal disinfection should be done using different disinfectants alternately. Check the pigeons twice daily—once in the morning and once during feeding—and pay attention to their behavior and droppings. If any sick pigeons are observed, isolate them immediately and treat them according to their symptoms.
