Adding sugar and ginger meat pigeons can resist cold
Although the winter weather is cold, even though meat pigeons have strong cold resistance, low temperatures can still significantly affect their growth, reproduction, and overall health. Based on years of practical experience, the author recommends that farmers implement the following measures to properly care for their pigeons during the winter season:
In terms of feeding, the cold weather increases the energy requirements of the pigeons. Therefore, it's essential to increase the amount of energy-rich feed, such as corn, and to add more crude protein to their diet. Additionally, the total quantity of feed should be increased compared to other seasons, and it's best to feed them again at night. Health sand is just as important as regular feed, and it shouldn't be given all at once in a single day. When preparing the health sand, it's recommended to carefully mix in the optimal amount of red sugar or ginger, which can help improve the pigeons’ ability to stay warm and resist colds.
The composition of meat pigeon health sand includes: 30% sand (1-2mm in diameter), 10% red clay, 30% shell powder, 10%-15% bone meal, 3% salt, 4% charcoal, 5% slaked lime and gypsum, and additives such as iron (0.5%), trace elements (1%), gentian (1%), licorice (1.5%), andrographolide (1%), and vitamin E (1%). Each pair of pigeons should receive 3-18 grams of health sand per day.
Pigeon raisers are advised to prepare medium sand, red clay, shell powder, and bone meal in advance. Other ingredients, especially the herbal additives, should be used fresh to prevent interactions or loss of potency. Some herbs can be adjusted based on the specific health conditions of the pigeons.
In terms of management, maintaining warmth and preventing cold exposure is crucial. Doors and windows should be kept closed to avoid drafts and cold air infiltration. However, it's important to note that closing windows for long periods can lead to poor indoor air quality. Therefore, on sunny days when the temperature is higher, it’s advisable for farmers to open windows for ventilation for 10-15 minutes each time to maintain good air circulation.
For heating, increasing the lighting in the coop or using additional heat sources like a small heater or a fire wall can help raise the temperature, especially on cloudy or dark days. This will create a more comfortable environment for the pigeons.
Regarding disease prevention, the high concentration of harmful gases such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in the cages can lead to respiratory diseases, cholera, and enteritis in meat pigeons. Therefore, it's important to maintain cleanliness both inside and outside the coop. Internal disinfection should be done by alternating between three or four different disinfectants for effective control. Farmers should check the pigeons every morning and evening—especially during feeding times—and observe their behavior and droppings closely. If any sick pigeons are noticed, they should be isolated immediately and treated according to their symptoms.
