Goat lung disease, also known as contagious pleuropneumonia, is a serious respiratory illness that affects goats. It is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, persistent coughing, fibrinous pneumonia, and inflammation of the pleura (pleurisy). This disease is most commonly seen during the summer and autumn seasons, when environmental conditions favor its spread.
Prevention plays a crucial role in controlling this disease. Vaccination is recommended once a year to build immunity in the herd. New goats introduced into the flock should be quarantined for at least one month and closely monitored for any signs of illness. Regular health checks are essential, and goats should be kept in healthy groups to minimize the risk of infection. Infected animals, suspected cases, and even those appearing healthy but potentially exposed should be separated and treated promptly to prevent the spread of the disease.
For treatment, several antibiotics can be used. One option is an intramuscular injection of streptomycin sulfate at a dose of 10–15 mg per kilogram of body weight, administered twice daily for five consecutive days. Another effective treatment involves injecting long-acting oxytetracycline at 5–10 mg per kg combined with dexamethasone at 4–12 mg per kg, given every three days. This combination has shown good results in reducing inflammation and fighting the infection. Additionally, sulfathiazole sodium can be used at a dose of 0.01–0.015 g per kg, diluted in a 4% aqueous solution, and administered subcutaneously once daily for five days.
Early detection and prompt treatment are key to managing this disease effectively. Farmers should remain vigilant and consult a veterinarian if they suspect an outbreak. Maintaining good hygiene, proper nutrition, and a clean living environment for the goats can also significantly reduce the risk of infection.
