How to Control Weeds after Summer Soybean Emergence

In recent years, the use of chemical herbicides has become a common practice among soybean farmers, especially before sowing or shortly after sowing but before the emergence of the crop. While this method is relatively easy for farmers to manage, it often leads to challenges as weeds grow alongside the soybeans. Many farmers struggle with knowing the right timing and technique for applying herbicides, which can lead to poor results or even damage to the crops. Not long ago, Liu Xiaocheng, a young farmer from Beacon Village in Shenhu Town, Hanchuan City, shared his difficulties over the phone. He had just harvested early-maturing rapeseed and was preparing to plant summer soybeans. However, due to time constraints, he found it hard to apply chemical herbicides effectively. Despite the rain, the soybeans had started to emerge, and the weeds were growing rapidly. He wanted to spray herbicides but was worried about harming the young soybean plants. He was unsure what to do next. After years of experience, experts have recommended several effective herbicide options based on local conditions, weed types, and the growth stage of the soybeans. For broadleaf weeds, farmers can use 25% Benzonsone at 300 ml per mu, or 24% Kebula at 30 ml per mu, or 21.4% of a specific herbicide at 300 ml per mu. Alternatively, 20% Soybean Yellow Powder at 4.5–5.5 grams per acre can be mixed with 40–50 kg of water and sprayed. These should be applied within the three-leaf stage of the soybean plants. For monocotyledonous weeds, 15% Emulsifiable Concentrate at 50–60 ml per mu or 12.5% Herb Oil at 30–35 ml per mu can be used, again with 40–50 kg of water. These should be applied from the emergence stage up to the early flowering period. Another major issue in soybean fields is dodder, a parasitic weed that causes serious damage. To control it, farmers can use 48% Diterpene EC at 225–250 ml per mu, mixed with 40–50 kg of water, and apply it when the soybean plants have 5–7 compound leaves. To ensure effective and safe herbicide application, farmers should follow some key technical guidelines. First, choose herbicides based on the type of weeds present in the field. If there are many broadleaf weeds, select herbicides that target both broadleaf and monocotyledonous weeds to avoid using the wrong type. Second, apply herbicides according to the soybean growth stage, ensuring the correct dosage is used. In soils with high organic matter, the dose can be increased by about 20%, while sandy or dry soils may require a reduction. Third, maintain moderate soil moisture during spraying and avoid spraying in windy or rainy conditions. Lastly, soybeans are sensitive to herbicides, so untested products should not be used, and mixing different herbicides without proper knowledge is also risky. By following these guidelines, farmers can significantly improve the effectiveness of their weed control efforts and reduce the risk of crop damage.
