Small Tail Han Sheep Summer Management
At the start of summer, it's essential to manage shearing and regularly remove manure from the sheep’s living area to prevent overheating. From this point on, we clean the barn every morning and check the feces for signs of redness or parasites. Proper ventilation is crucial, and thorough disinfection should be maintained to keep the environment healthy. After the sheep graze on fresh grass, most of them don’t need additional supplements—except for weak or pregnant sheep. However, these supplements shouldn't be stopped suddenly; they should be gradually reduced instead.
During the summer solstice, grazing times are adjusted to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Sheep are let out at 6 a.m. and return at 8 p.m., then go out again at 5 p.m. and come back by 7 p.m. This helps them avoid the midday heat. The barn should remain well-ventilated, dry, and not overcrowded. Providing fresh water or dandelion tea can help cool them down and support detoxification.
In this season, rainfall is common, so it's important to ensure that the barn stays dry and free from mud. Sheep should not be allowed to lie in wet areas, as this can lead to health issues. Prepare extra feed for rainy days, and avoid breeding lambs during this time, as it's commonly said, “No lamb in July, no lamb in February.†Be especially cautious of heatstroke and take all necessary precautions to keep the flock safe and comfortable.
