Cultivation of kelp and other economic algae
Kelp, seaweed, wakame, agaric, eucheuma, and leeks are all economically significant algae that are widely consumed in East Asian countries such as China, Japan, and North Korea. Among these, kelp holds a special place due to its nutritional value and culinary versatility.
Native to the cold waters of Japan and North Korea, kelp was once primarily imported into China before liberation. However, after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, marine scientists and aquaculture workers made significant breakthroughs in kelp cultivation. Through scientific experimentation, they developed techniques to manually control seawater temperature for seedling production. Over the past two decades, China has transformed kelp farming into a large-scale industry. Today, China produces approximately 500,000 tons of fresh kelp annually, accounting for nearly half of global seaweed production and placing it at the top of the world’s kelp producers.
Traditionally, kelp cultivation relied on spore germination, which is highly sensitive to water temperature. If the temperature rises above a certain threshold, spores fail to germinate or do so at a very low rate. This posed a challenge for China, where sea temperatures were not ideal for natural spore growth. Although some kelp seedlings were introduced from Japan and North Korea—particularly around Dalian Port—they never formed large-scale wild kelp communities.
The solution came through controlled environments. By regulating the temperature in nursery rooms, scientists successfully encouraged spore germination, producing kelp seedlings. These seedlings were then attached to hemp ropes and placed on floating rafts in kelp farms. This method led to the development of large-scale kelp farms with thousands of kelp strands.
Like traditional crops, kelp farming requires careful management. Farmers perform tasks such as fertilization, flipping seedlings to different depths, and removing unwanted organisms. After months of hard work, small seedlings grow into long kelp fronds reaching up to 10 meters in length by autumn.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that kelp cultivation, initially controlled through temperature, has now expanded from northern China to coastal areas in Fujian Province in the south. This expansion has solidified China's position as the leading country in kelp aquaculture worldwide.
