The Benefits of Baby-Led Weaning by Fresh Mommy Blog

Finn just turned six months old, and he's already sitting up like a pro! So naturally, we're diving into the exciting world of "real food" with him. Watching him explore new flavors and textures has been absolutely hilarious. He's definitely got his own ideas about what he likes and doesn't like—so far, the jury's still out on most things!

With our older child, Max, we followed the traditional method of starting with rice cereal and progressing to pureed baby food. But with Finn, we decided to try something different: Baby-Led Weaning (BLW). The concept behind BLW is simple—instead of spoon-feeding purees, you offer your baby small pieces of whole foods and let them figure out how to eat on their own (always under close supervision, of course).

So far, it’s been a mix of laughter and chaos! Finn isn’t quite ready to embrace all the textures yet, but watching him attempt to grab those slippery little bites is priceless. Plus, there’s something oddly satisfying about seeing him take control of his own mealtime.

Here are five reasons why Baby-Led Weaning might be worth considering:

1. No extra effort during dinner time: With BLW, your baby can join in on family meals right from the start. There’s no need for constant spoon-feeding—you just set them up with some safe finger foods and let them dive in. Sure, there will be messes, but hey, that’s part of the fun!

2. Natural portion control: One of the biggest benefits of BLW is that your baby gets to decide how much they want to eat. Unlike spoon-fed meals where parents might finish off a jar regardless of whether the baby is full, BLW encourages self-regulation. Babies tend to stop eating when they’re satisfied, which can help prevent overeating.

3. Learning at their own pace: Every child develops differently, and BLW gives them the freedom to explore food at their own speed. Some kids pick up hand-eye coordination quickly, while others take longer—it’s all normal. By allowing them to learn naturally, you’re fostering independence and confidence.

4. Less reliance on purees: Pureeing food can be convenient, but after a while, it can feel monotonous. BLW reduces the need for constant puree prep, giving you more time to focus on other aspects of parenting—or even enjoy your own meal without interruption!

5. Saves money and time: Preparing homemade purees or buying store-bought ones can add up. With BLW, you’re simply offering your baby pieces of food you’d normally serve at mealtime. This eliminates the hassle of buying special ingredients or making separate meals for everyone.

And remember, food before one is really just for fun! Your baby’s primary source of nutrition will still come from breast milk or formula until around their first birthday. Until then, keep things light-hearted and enjoy watching them discover the wonders of mealtime.
