Dragon fruit, also known as red dragon fruit, blue dragon fruit, and fairy fruit, is a nutrient-rich tropical fruit with several popular varieties, including white, red, and yellow dragon fruit. It is packed with essential nutrients such as vitamins, cellulose, glucose, carotene, amino acids, phosphorus, and iron. The fruit offers numerous health benefits, including detoxification, stomach nourishment, blood purification, blood pressure reduction, cholesterol lowering, prevention of arterial hardening, relief from constipation, anemia, angular cheilitis, and colds. Additionally, it has beauty-enhancing and anti-aging properties. Beyond its health benefits, dragon fruit is also valued for its unique appearance—large, bright red fruits that stand out in any garden or orchard. While it's typically grown in tropical regions, some success has been achieved in northern areas through greenhouse cultivation. For example, the Langfang Agricultural High-Tech Innovation and Technology Demonstration Park has successfully cultivated dragon fruit in greenhouses since 2000. The key to successful greenhouse cultivation includes proper design and construction. The greenhouses used are often referred to as "Langfang-type 40 solar greenhouses," which are cost-effective, have good light transmission, and offer excellent insulation. These structures are designed with specific dimensions: an area of 80 square meters, a north-south length of 18 meters, and a southwest orientation of 5 to 100 degrees to optimize sunlight exposure. The back wall is 2.8 meters high, with a base width of 4.5 meters and a top width of 2 meters. The walls are built using mechanical soil compaction techniques, ensuring stability and durability. Inside the greenhouse, an iron arch beam is placed every 1.5 meters, supported by central pillars and fixed piles. The rear roof projection is 0.8 meters with a 45-degree angle, and anchor trenches are dug on both east and west sides. Galvanized iron wire is used to create tension lines for structural support, while corn stalks and soil are layered on the back slope for added insulation. The structure is then covered with plastic film and kraft paper to maintain warmth during colder months. For planting, 305 cement posts are installed at 1.2-meter intervals, each holding two seedlings. Before planting, the soil is enriched with organic compost and diammonium phosphate as base fertilizer. Cultivation and management involve careful watering and fertilization. Dragon fruit is drought-tolerant but sensitive to waterlogging, so irrigation should be done sparingly and only when necessary. Fertilization focuses on a balanced mix of organic and chemical fertilizers, applied every 15–20 days during the fruiting period. Since dragon fruit has a shallow root system, fertilizers must be applied carefully around the surface. Pruning is essential to maintain plant health and productivity. After planting, the main trunk is kept while all side branches are removed. Once the trunk reaches 1.3–1.5 meters, topping is done to encourage lateral growth. Each plant can bear about 20 branches, with 3 fruits per branch. Weak fruits are removed if they are too close together to ensure even growth. Pests like snails and crickets may feed on tender shoots, but lime application and poison bait traps can help control them. Fruit flies can damage mature fruits, so fly paper and biological pesticides like "Thousand Insects" are effective solutions. Harvesting occurs 30–40 days after flowering, when the skin turns red and shiny. Fruits are cut with pruning shears, leaving a small stalk to reduce post-harvest spoilage. They can be stored at room temperature for over 15 days, or up to two months in a refrigerated environment at 10–15°C. Overall, dragon fruit is not only a nutritious fruit but also a beautiful addition to any garden or agricultural setting.
