Cucumber high back wall without backward slope greenhouse cultivation
In the early 1970s, many provinces in Liaoning Province began constructing a unique type of solar greenhouse that featured only gable ends and a back wall, without any roof posts. These greenhouses had a back wall that stood approximately 2.3 to 2.4 meters high. The framework was made from bamboo poles used as arch rods, with the top of the structure directly resting on the rear wall. The front roof was designed as a half-arch shape, and during the night, it was covered with straw or paper to help retain heat.
This design eliminated the need for a rear roof, which significantly reduced construction costs and saved on building materials. The greenhouses allowed for ample sunlight exposure during the day, leading to efficient warming and higher internal temperatures. However, the lack of a rear roof also meant that heat dissipated quickly at night, making it difficult to maintain stable temperatures. As a result, crops like cucumbers could not be grown during the winter months. Instead, cultivation was limited to the early spring or late autumn seasons, when temperatures were more favorable. Despite these limitations, this type of greenhouse played an important role in early agricultural practices, offering a cost-effective solution for small-scale farming in northern China.
