Cucumber high back wall without backward slope greenhouse cultivation
In the early 1970s, many provinces in Liaoning Province began constructing retro-style solar greenhouses that featured only gable ends and back walls, without any roof posts. The back wall stood approximately 2.3 to 2.4 meters high, and bamboo poles were used as the arch supports. These poles were placed directly on top of the rear wall, forming a half-arched front roof. At night, the structure was covered with straw or paper to retain heat.
This type of greenhouse was designed to maximize sunlight exposure during the day, allowing it to warm up quickly and maintain relatively high temperatures. Its simple design helped reduce construction costs and material usage. However, due to the lack of a rear roof, insulation was poor, leading to significant heat loss at night. As a result, it was difficult to maintain stable temperatures, especially during winter. This limitation made it unsuitable for growing cucumbers in cold months, restricting cultivation to early spring or late autumn when temperatures were milder.
Despite these challenges, this early greenhouse model laid the foundation for later improvements in solar greenhouse technology, demonstrating the importance of balancing cost, light exposure, and thermal efficiency in agricultural structures. Over time, more advanced designs incorporated additional insulation and structural elements to enhance year-round productivity.
