The success of cultivating *Pleurotus ostreatus* in winter largely depends on maintaining proper temperature conditions. Through practical experience, the author has developed a simple and effective insulation method that doesn't require coal stoves or electric heating. Below are the detailed steps:
In late autumn, it's essential to begin bagging and inoculating *Pleurotus ostreatus*. If you're not growing it early, you can provide heat once the temperature drops. This helps kickstart the growth process and ensures better results.
Once the ambient temperature decreases, it's best to start the bag code with half-inoculated mycelium. The size and width of the bags should be as large as possible to make handling, warming, and insulation easier. For the bag code structure, arrange four rows per section with 67 cm spacing between them for easy access and rotation. Each row should contain seven bags, with about 5 cm gaps between each row to allow proper air circulation.
To insulate the bacterial bags, cover them with two layers of plastic film. It’s also effective to combine newly inoculated bags with those that already have half-grown mycelium. Place the half-myceliated bags on the bottom three layers, then stack four freshly inoculated bags on top. Cover everything with plastic film. As the fungus begins to grow, the bags will generate heat. As the mycelium fully develops, the heat production increases. Therefore, it's important to check the internal temperature of the bags daily. If the temperature rises above 27°C, remove the plastic film to prevent overheating.
When the mycelium starts to form a white covering, immediately move the bags to the fruiting area. Then place the newly inoculated bags on top of the ones that still have developing mycelium, and continue incubation under the plastic cover. This way, the matured bags are gradually removed, and new inoculated bags take their place, ensuring a continuous and efficient cultivation cycle.
