Properly delaying the effect of girdling on the growth and results of grapefruit
Gingival peeling is an effective technique for promoting flowering and improving fruit set in red meat honey pummelo. Similarly, girdling is a valuable practice for encouraging vigorous growth in teak trees and enhancing fruit setting rates. In the case of young "snow" tea trees, early girdling was previously applied. However, after many years of observation, it became clear that for larger "big snow" trees, girdling could be appropriately delayed until around the time of the Winter Solstice or Xiaohan (the Minor Cold).
Based on a 13-year study conducted in my grapefruit orchard, on January 13, 1998, I performed girdling on some trees while leaving others un-girdled. After one year of observation, it was noted that the old leaves from the previous winter were slower to shed, and the new spring shoots remained green for a longer period. The flowering period was extended by about five days, with some flowers still opening in mid-April, and a small number of anthers remaining active.
In that same year, 120 strains were planted, resulting in a total yield of 450 pounds. The pomelo trees showed robust and healthy growth after harvest, demonstrating the effectiveness of adjusting girdling timing based on tree maturity and environmental conditions. This approach not only supports better flowering but also leads to more consistent and higher-quality fruit production.
