How to cultivate healthy seedlings
The newly hatched Aberdeen oysters still have their umbilical cord attached and the yolk sac hasn't fully been absorbed. It's important to keep them in the hatchery for at least one more day before moving them, as rushing the process could lead to high mortality rates. On the first day after hatching, the larvae are placed into plastic pots to help them adjust to their new diet. The pots are filled with fine sand and about 3 cm of water. Each pot contains roughly 100 larvae, and feeding begins daily at 9:00 p.m., with 4 eggs provided per pot. During feeding, the water is also changed to maintain cleanliness. After three days of consistent feeding, the oysters typically adapt well to their environment and are ready to enter the cultivation phase.
There are two main methods of cultivation:
1. **Cement Pond Cultivation**:
Each cement pond covers an area of 8-10 square meters with a depth of 1 meter and a water depth of 0.3 meters. The bottom is covered with 2-3 cm of fine sand and slopes slightly toward the outlet for easy drainage. Before use, the ponds are disinfected twice using quicklime or potassium permanganate, at a rate of 70-80 grams per square meter. Every seven days, starting from the seventh day, feedings of either algae or plankton are given, with each meal amounting to 10% of the oysters' body weight. The feed is mixed with 5% fish oil, along with some milk powder, vitamin C, and E, and then distributed evenly in the pond. After six hours, the uneaten food is removed, and the water is changed to maintain good quality. Disinfection with lime or bleach is done every 7-10 days to prevent disease outbreaks. To provide shade and improve water quality, nylon shelters and aquatic plants like water peanuts or fake daffodils are added. After approximately 30 days of cultivation, the juvenile oysters reach 10-15 grams and can be transferred to earth ponds for further growth. The survival rate is around 95%, and they grow rapidly—most reach over 500 grams within the same year, making them suitable for market.
2. **Earthen Pond Cultivation**:
The earthen pond should not be too large, ideally around 5 mu (about 3,333 square meters). After cleaning and disinfecting using traditional methods, a small section of 200 square meters is enclosed with bamboo poles in one corner. Stocking density is about 30-50 oysters per square meter, and feeding and management practices are similar to those used in cement ponds. Since the young oysters are more adaptable to natural conditions, they tend to grow faster at lower stocking densities. However, it's crucial to protect them from predators such as water snakes and rats. Effective prevention measures include removing weeds around the pond and spreading lime in a circle around the edge to deter rodents. Another method is to install electric wires around the perimeter and energize them at night, which helps prevent rat infestations. Safety precautions must be taken to avoid any accidents.
