Autumn is a prime time for raising ducks, as the weather is mild and forage is abundant. It's an ideal season for duck farming, offering low investment, quick returns, and high profitability. However, to ensure success, there are ten important points to consider when raising ducklings:
First, select healthy ducklings. Choose those that are clean, active, with bright eyes and smooth feathers, eating quickly and in large amounts, and making loud noises. These signs indicate good health and vitality.
Second, start feeding properly. After bringing the ducklings home, mix 50 grams of Coptis and 250 grams of licorice with spices for every 100 ducklings. Then, combine 0.5 kg of mung beans with 0.1 kg of gypsum and 10 kg of rice, feeding this mixture for 3 to 5 days. Provide brown sugar or honey water during this period. Avoid letting them swim within the first 7 days. Keep them away from temperatures above 32°C, and provide shaded areas like under trees or near streams for rest. Do not allow them to gather together. After starting to eat, feed them half-cooked rice and cold water, 5 to 7 times a day. After 5 days, give them lightly salted water. By day 7, let them swim in shallow water for 15 minutes twice daily—once before 10 a.m. and once after 6 p.m. From day 20 onward, introduce green feeds like duckweed daily. As they grow, they will begin to forage on their own, so gradually reduce feeding frequency and quantity. You can also supplement their diet with feces and worms. By day 30, they can be moved into rice fields or rivers.
Third, provide shade. In early autumn, temperatures can still be high, so it’s crucial to keep ducks in shaded areas like sheds or under trees during midday heat to prevent heatstroke. It’s recommended to have a shelter for every 100 ducks.
Fourth, ensure proper ventilation. Maintain good airflow in the duck house to keep it cool and fresh. If the weather is hot at night and the ducks seem restless, you can move them into a pond or use electric fans to help cool them down.
Fifth, prepare the feed properly. After 7 days of age, ducklings can transition to regular feeding. A balanced feed mix includes 38% corn, 12% bran, 25% soybean cake, 3% fishmeal, 20% shell powder, 1.5% bone meal, 0.5% salt, providing about 11.72–12.4 MJ of metabolic energy and 18–19% crude protein per kilogram. Feed them every 3 hours during the first week, then 3–4 times daily after 20 days. Using paddy field grazing can help reduce feed costs.

Avoid grazing in pesticide-contaminated areas, hot roads, or under direct sunlight. Also, avoid sudden movements that might scare the ducks.
Seventh, provide insulation. As October ends, protect ducks from cold winds by moving them to warmer areas like sandy beaches, ponds, or canals.
Eighth, prevent heatstroke. Ducklings are sensitive to heat. If they show signs of restlessness, let them swim in deep ditches. If they appear lethargic or circle around, they may be suffering from heatstroke. Offer them vinegar or sugar water and place them in a cool area to recover.
Ninth, focus on fattening. By 50–60 days of age, ducks can reach 1–1.2 kg. At this stage, switch to high-energy, low-protein compound feed to accelerate growth.
Tenth, implement disease prevention. Ducks in autumn are prone to diseases like big head lice, which can cause up to 90% mortality. Regularly clean the coop, wash feeders, and keep the environment dry and well-ventilated. Use lime solution (10–29%) for disinfection. Vaccinate ducks against common diseases like duck plague and poultry outbreaks. Administer oxytetracycline at 500 grams per 50 kg of feed for secondary infections. Isolate sick ducks and treat them promptly. Traditional remedies, such as mixing 250 grams of butter, 120 grams each of pepper and garlic for 80 ducks, or frying 1 kg of barley and mixing with wheat and rabbit blood, have proven effective in preventing diseases. After feeding, withhold water for 24 hours to enhance effectiveness.
