In greenhouse settings where plastic film is used, it's often more practical to apply most of the fertilizer as a base rather than top-dressing later due to the difficulty of accessing the plants. The fertilizer requirements can vary between old and new greenhouses. New greenhouses typically require more fertilization because the soil lacks residual nutrients, while older sheds may already have some nutrient buildup. However, many old shed soils tend to be high in nitrogen and phosphorus but low in potassium. This imbalance needs to be corrected to ensure optimal growth. To improve soil fertility, the following methods are recommended: 1. Apply 6,000 kg of organic fertilizer per 667 square meters (approximately one acre). If the greenhouse is old, reduce the amount slightly and add 20–30 kg of potassium sulfate. The organic and potash fertilizers should be thoroughly mixed into the soil. It’s crucial that the organic material is fully decomposed before use. Using a specialized compost starter, such as a "Golden Baby Starter," helps speed up decomposition and reduces nutrient loss. It also eliminates harmful bacteria, eggs, and other pathogens, ensuring a safer and more effective growing environment. 2. Combine microbial bacterial fertilizers with manure or fine soil. For best results, apply around 2–3 million units of microbial fertilizer per acre. Mix it into the soil during tilling or by creating small holes and filling them with the mixture. This method enhances soil structure, promotes beneficial microorganisms, and improves overall plant health. By carefully managing fertilizer application and using the right types of nutrients, farmers can significantly improve eggplant yield and quality while maintaining sustainable soil health.
