Chestnut fruit before and after heavy fruit fertilization
Chestnut trees have a long fruiting period and produce a large amount of nuts, which requires significant nutrient consumption. During the time before and after fruit ripening, the tree's vitality is often in a state of starvation or semi-starvation. This weakened condition can negatively affect flowering in the following year. To prevent this, it's essential to apply fertilizer at the right time—before harvest, after harvest, and to replenish nutrients. Doing so helps accelerate the tree's recovery, laying a solid foundation for high yields and stable production in the next season.
The recommended practice includes two key stages: pre-harvest and post-harvest fertilization. When chestnut fruits turn brown, it's the ideal time to apply quick-acting fertilizers. For trees producing more than 50 kilograms of nuts, each tree should receive 1.5–2 kg of urea and 0.5–1 kg of potassium chloride. These can be spread after rainfall or mixed with 80–100 liters of fresh water or decomposed human and animal manure. This ensures the nutrients are quickly absorbed by the roots.
After harvesting, the post-harvest fertilizer should be applied within 5–10 days. The main components include compound fertilizers rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with high-quality organic materials. Apply 2–3 kg of compound fertilizer per tree, combined with 1.5–2 kg of ground peanut bran and 25–30 kg of well-decomposed animal manure. Dig a ring-shaped trench around the tree canopy, about 25–30 cm deep and wide. If the weather is dry, water the soil after applying the fertilizer or use 80–100 liters of decomposed manure solution.
In addition to fertilizing, foliar sprays are also important. Before and after fruit harvesting, spray the leaves 3–5 times with a mixture containing 0.1% magnesium sulfate, 0.3% urea, 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 1,000 times diluted triacontanol. Apply the spray every 7–10 days to ensure optimal nutrient absorption through the leaves. This comprehensive approach not only supports the tree’s recovery but also improves its overall health and productivity for the next growing season.
