Related Tropical Orchid Diseases and Prevention Points

(1) Leaf Spot – commonly affects Carterian and Phalaenopsis orchids. Initially, infected leaves show small black spots surrounded by yellow, water-soaked areas. Over time, these develop into round or oval lesions. The disease is typically triggered by high humidity. To manage it, improve air circulation, reduce moisture levels, and remove affected leaves. Apply a 50% carbendazim solution diluted at 800 times or a 1% Bordeaux mixture for effective control. (2) Anthracnose – primarily impacts orchid leaves, especially in poorly ventilated and hot conditions. Symptoms include elliptical lesions that start as yellow spots and eventually turn black. To prevent spread, remove diseased leaves, enhance ventilation, and lower humidity. Treat with a 500-fold dilution of carbendazim, chlorothalonil, or thiophanate-methyl. Repeat applications every 10–15 days for best results. (3) Stem Rot – a severe disease that starts at the base of the stem and spreads to roots and leaves, often leading to plant death. If detected early, stop watering immediately and allow the plant to dry out in sunlight. Apply a 1% Bordeaux mixture or 600 mg/L zinc naphthenate to help control the infection. (4) Soft Rot – mainly affects Caterpillar and Phalaenopsis orchids. Early signs include water-soaked green spots on the leaf tips, resembling burns, followed by soft, decayed tissue with an unpleasant odor. As soon as symptoms appear, cut off the affected leaves and treat the wounds with charcoal powder or chlorothalonil. Spray the plant with a 1% Bordeaux mixture to prevent further spread. (5) Rust – appears first on the leaves as tan-colored powdery spots. This disease thrives in low temperatures and high humidity. It commonly affects varieties such as Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Dendrobium, and Oncidium. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering, especially in humid or cloudy weather. Improve ventilation, remove infected leaves, and spray with 80% zinc naphthenate at 500 times dilution or 1% lime sulfur. (6) Brown Rot – primarily affects Paphiopedilum and other pseudobulb orchids. The disease progresses rapidly, and once noticed, the plant may already be severely rotten. The entire plant turns dark, and the inner tissues become mushy. Immediately stop watering, cut off the affected parts, disinfect the wounds with charcoal or chlorothalonil, and apply a 1% Bordeaux mixture or 200 mg/L agricultural streptomycin to prevent further damage. (7) Bacterial Disease – occurs in most tropical orchids. In the early stages, the stems show yellow or light brown water-soaked lesions. White fungal growth then appears on the rhizosphere soil, causing the entire plant to rot. Control measures include improving air circulation, removing infected parts, and treating the area with a 1% copper sulfate solution or 500–1000 times diluted dexamethasone. This helps to inhibit bacterial spread. (8) Flower Rot – most common in Cattleya and Phalaenopsis. It usually occurs during flowering when greenhouse temperatures are high and outdoor temperatures are low. At first, small brown spots appear on the petals, which gradually enlarge but remain limited to the flowers. If a sudden temperature drop occurs before blooming, reduce indoor humidity and spray with 50% carbendazim at 500 times or 1% lime sulfur to prevent the disease. (9) Virus Disease – a difficult-to-treat condition transmitted by sucking insects like aphids. Symptoms begin with yellow spots or markings on leaves and flowers, which later turn black. The plant eventually shrivels and dies. Once infected, there is no effective chemical treatment. Infected plants should be removed and buried immediately to prevent spreading the virus to healthy plants.
