Related Tropical Orchid Diseases and Prevention Points

(1) Leaf Spot – commonly affects Carterian and Phalaenopsis orchids. Initially, infected leaves show small black spots surrounded by yellow, water-soaked areas. Over time, these develop into round or oval lesions. This disease is typically triggered by high humidity. To manage it, improve air circulation, lower humidity levels, and promptly remove affected leaves. Apply a 50% carbendazim solution diluted at 800 times or use a 1% Bordeaux mixture for effective control. (2) Anthracnose primarily targets orchid leaves, especially in poorly ventilated and hot environments. The symptoms begin as yellowish elliptical spots that eventually turn black. To prevent spread, remove diseased leaves, enhance ventilation, and reduce humidity. Apply fungicides such as carbendazim, chlorothalonil, or thiophanate-methyl at a 500x dilution, repeating every 10 to 15 days for best results. (3) Stem Rot is a severe disease that starts at the base of the stem and can quickly spread to the roots and leaves, leading to plant death in severe cases. If detected early, stop watering immediately and expose the plant to sunlight. Treat with a 1% Bordeaux mixture or 600 mg/L zinc-based fungicide to slow down the progression. (4) Soft Rot mainly affects Caterpillar and Phalaenopsis orchids. Early signs include water-soaked green spots on the leaf tips, resembling burns. The tissue becomes waterlogged, soft, and emits an odor. As soon as the disease is noticed, cut off the affected leaves, treat the wounds with charcoal powder or chlorothalonil, and spray the plant with a 1% Bordeaux mixture to prevent further damage. (5) Rust appears first on the leaves, producing tan powdery spots. It thrives in cool, humid conditions and commonly affects species like Caterran, Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Dendrobium, and Whelan. Avoid getting leaves wet during watering, especially in cloudy or humid weather. Improve air circulation, remove infected leaves, and apply 80% zinc naphthenate at 500x or 1% lime sulfur to manage the disease effectively. (6) Brown Rot mainly affects Paphiopedilum and other pseudobulb tropical orchids. The disease progresses rapidly, and once detected, the plant may already be dead due to rotting. The entire plant turns dark, and the internal tissue becomes mushy. Act immediately by stopping watering, removing the affected parts, disinfecting the wounds with charcoal or chlorothalonil, and applying a 1% Bordeaux mixture or 200 mg/L agricultural streptomycin to prevent further spread. (7) Bacterial Diseases affect almost all tropical orchids. In the early stages, yellow or light brown watery spots appear on the stems, followed by white mycelium growth on the rhizosphere soil, leading to complete plant decay. These diseases are common during hot and rainy seasons. Upon detection, remove the infected stems, improve ventilation, and soak the roots in a 1% copper sulfate solution or spray the soil with 50% dexamethasone at 500–1000x to suppress bacterial growth. (8) Flower Rot is most common in Caterran and Phalaenopsis orchids. It often occurs during flowering when greenhouse temperatures are high while outside temperatures are low. Initially, small brown spots appear on the petals, which gradually expand but remain confined to the flowers. To prevent this, if the weather suddenly cools before blooming, reduce indoor humidity and apply 50% carbendazim at 500x or 1% lime sulfur to protect the flowers. (9) Virus Diseases are difficult to treat and are transmitted by aphids and other sucking insects. Symptoms start with yellow spots or markings on leaves and flowers, which later turn black. Infected plants eventually wilt and die. Once identified, immediately discard and bury the affected plants to prevent the spread to healthy ones. There is currently no effective chemical treatment available for viral infections.
