The location must ensure a sufficient and high-quality water supply, as water is fundamental to crab cultivation. It is crucial to assess the water quality for any harmful substances, especially if nearby industrial areas may pollute the source. Water quality standards set by the WTO and China's "Fishery Water Quality Standards" (NY5051-2001) should be followed. Additionally, hydrological, meteorological, and topographical data must be collected to determine if the site can support consistent water flow for breeding.
The terrain should be suitable for construction and have convenient access for transportation. Avoid using fertile farmland or polluted areas. Instead, opt for natural lake banks that are free from contamination. This not only supports pollution-free farming but also reduces construction costs by utilizing natural drainage and irrigation systems. The soil must be compact enough to prevent water leakage in the crab ponds, and the surrounding area should allow for easy transport of supplies and harvested crabs.
Pond design plays a key role in successful crab farming. The pond should be large enough—around 1 hectare—to promote natural oxygenation and water circulation. A water depth of 0.5–1.5 meters is ideal, balancing stability with the growth needs of both crabs and aquatic plants. The layout should be rectangular, oriented east-west, to maximize sunlight exposure and ease of management. Escape prevention is critical, as crabs are known for their climbing abilities. Installing sturdy barriers such as cement walls, plastic sheets, or nylon films around the pond is essential.
Before stocking, the pond must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to eliminate pests and pathogens. Common disinfectants include quicklime and bleaching powder. After disinfection, aquatic plants like black algae and Elodea should be planted to provide shelter, improve water quality, and serve as a natural food source. Selecting the right crab species is vital. Preferably, use native or well-bred crabs from the Yangtze River region. They should be healthy, active, and free from disease. Stocking density should be carefully managed, typically around 1 crab per square meter, and timing is crucial—usually between late February and March when conditions are favorable.
Feeding strategies must be scientifically planned, combining natural feed like aquatic plants with artificial feeds. A balanced diet ensures optimal growth and health. Disease prevention involves regular water quality monitoring, adjusting pH levels, and applying biological treatments like photosynthetic bacteria.
