Russian researchers have developed a new type of biopesticide

Russian scientists have recently developed a new bio-insecticide that can kill five types of crop pests such as moths, beetles, aphids, cockroaches, and thrips (Thysanoptera).
The Russian "Izvestia" reported that scientists have discovered that Bacillus thuringiensis has multiple strains that can synthesize different crystal proteins. These proteins belong to endotoxins, but endotoxins that kill moths are often ineffective against beetles, and vice versa.
To solve this problem, experts from the National Institute of Microbial Genetics and Breeding of the Russian Industrial Institute selected two strains of Bacillus thuringiensis, and their synthetic endotoxins have different insecticidal ranges. Through the hybridization of the two bacilli, the researcher finally developed a new bacillus strain. Its unique DNA (DNA) can simultaneously direct the synthesis of its two “endorses” unique to the parent endotoxin. Laboratory tests have shown that the cysts and endotoxins of new bacilli kill potato beetles many times that of their "parents," and can kill 58% of the gypsy moth larvae that damage fruit trees. The death rate of exposure to new bacillus in larvae of Mediterranean sea larvae fed on cereals and beans was low, at 26%. In addition, the mortality rates of cotton aphid, western flower thrips and certain leafhoppers that endanger a variety of fruits and vegetables can reach 59%, 53% and 91%, respectively, after encountering the new bacilli.
Since then, experts have conducted field experiments. The results showed that the preparations containing the new bacillus can effectively kill several species of aphids and thrips harmful to cotton, tobacco and roses, and the effect of disinfestation can be comparable to that of the chemical pesticide “malathion” used, but it is against warm blood. Animals and some beneficial insects have fewer side effects than "malathion." Some pests that are resistant to chemical pesticides are still unable to withstand this new formulation.
