Three notes of grass geese
(A) Pay attention to selecting the right grass species.
When choosing grass varieties, two key points should be considered. First, it's important to purchase high-quality seeds from reliable sources. The market today is flooded with various types of grass seeds, and some untrustworthy sellers may sell low-quality or even fake seeds, which can mislead farmers. To ensure success, it’s best to obtain seeds from agricultural research institutions, official grass companies, or animal husbandry departments. Avoid being tempted by cheap options, as poor quality seeds can lead to disappointing results after planting, ultimately affecting your production outcomes. Second, select grass species that match the digestive system of geese. Suitable forage for geese includes ryegrass, Rumex, and grain pods, which are nutritious and easy for them to digest.
(B) Pay attention to determining the area for forage cultivation based on the number of geese.
On average, 0.5 to 15,000 kilograms of fresh grass can be harvested per 0.067 hectares. During the 80-day fattening period of meat geese, you would need to plant about 100 to 150 hectares of forage per 0.067 hectares. However, in real farming situations, factors like weather conditions and field management can significantly impact grass yield. Additionally, the timing of slaughter depends on market prices for meat and geese, making it an unpredictable factor. Therefore, it's wise to plan for a slightly larger pasture area than the theoretical calculation suggests. Also, make sure the grazing period aligns with the hatching time to avoid having no pasture available when goslings arrive or hatch.
(3) Pay attention to feeding before and after the fattening period.
Goslings have underdeveloped digestive systems and grow rapidly, so they require easily digestible and nutrient-rich feed. Pellets are a good choice during this stage. When supplementing feed, start with dry feed before offering green forage to prevent goslings from skipping the more nutritious pellets. As the geese grow older, gradually increase the amount of green feed while reducing the concentrate. Around 30 days of age, you can stop using supplements and rely mainly on pasture. However, it's recommended to resume feed supplementation about 20 days before slaughter to help improve the weight and quality of the geese.
