Autumn cabbage August clever management

When the autumn cabbage starts to form a cross, it's time to begin thinning the seedlings. At this stage, you should keep three plants per spot. As the seedlings grow to about four or five leaves, perform the second thinning, leaving two per hole. Then, plant them in groups, keeping one strong seedling per hole. It's important to select large, vigorous, and uniform seedlings, avoiding weak or irregular ones. During this process, follow five key principles: keep small ones if they're healthy, remove weak ones, maintain only the best, ensure uniformity, and avoid overcrowding.

Proper cultivation techniques are essential for healthy growth. The method of weeding involves three steps: shallow digging at the beginning, deeper digging in the middle, and shallow again at the end, ensuring that roots are not damaged. This helps loosen the soil, improve aeration, control weeds, and promote better root development. By maintaining good soil conditions, you can accelerate early growth and support the overall health of the plants.

After the first thinning, apply a light fertilizer to stimulate growth. This is known as the seedling fertilizer. Once the plant enters the rosette stage, it's important to provide additional nutrients to support leaf development, which will later help in forming the head. You can use fermented human urine, superphosphate, wood ash, or potassium phosphate. Before the head begins to form, apply a balanced organic fertilizer, avoiding chemical fertilizers for organic crops. Instead, use compost, cake fertilizer, or microbial-based products for sustainable growth.

Effective pest and disease management is crucial for healthy cabbage production. Focus on preventing common issues like downy mildew and soft rot by using safe, low-toxicity pesticides. Applying a diluted solution of high-fat film (400 times) can help protect seedlings from diseases, pests, and contamination. It also enhances color and quality while reducing pesticide residues. Prevention is more effective than cure, so early intervention and integrated strategies—such as biological and agricultural methods—are recommended to minimize losses and ensure environmentally friendly production.
