How to raise celery summer seedlings

Parsley is a cold-tolerant vegetable that thrives in cool and moist conditions. However, when cultivating it during the hot Summer months, it's crucial to start with strong, healthy seedlings. After years of hands-on experience, I've developed a reliable method for growing robust summer parsley seedlings, which I'd like to share with you. **Variety Selection** Choosing the right variety is key to successful summer cultivation. Opt for heat-resistant, high-temperature tolerant, and disease-resistant celery varieties. Based on my experience, varieties such as Celery 3, Emperor West Celery, and New Generation Celery have shown excellent adaptability and resilience under high temperatures, making them ideal choices for summer planting. **Sowing Time** The best time to sow celery in your region is typically between early June and late June. It's important to plant at the right time to ensure optimal growth before the peak of summer heat. **Seed Germination Conditions** Celery seeds prefer cooler temperatures for germination, ideally between 15°C and 20°C. If the temperature exceeds 25°C, germination becomes difficult, and above 30°C, the seeds may not germinate at all. Therefore, direct sowing in dry soil during summer is not recommended. Instead, it's better to pre-germinate the seeds under controlled low-temperature conditions. **Seed Soaking and Germination** Start by soaking the seeds in cold water for about 24 hours. After rinsing, drain off excess moisture and let them air dry for 10–20 minutes. Then, wrap the seeds in layers of clean, damp cloth—without pressing too tightly—and place them in a cool environment (15°C to 20°C). You can use a refrigerator if available, or in areas without refrigeration, place the seeds in a cellar or hang them in a well with the seeds about 1 meter above the water level. Make sure to open the cloth every 1–2 days for ventilation. If the surface starts to dry, mist the seeds lightly to maintain moisture. The seeds should be ready to sow after approximately 6 days. **Sowing Method** In summer, heavy rainfall often occurs, so it’s essential to prepare raised seedbeds with good drainage. Apply sufficient base fertilizer and then water the soil thoroughly. Once the water has been absorbed, mix the soaked seeds with fine soil and sprinkle them evenly into the seedbed. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, about 0.5 cm thick. Keep the seedbed consistently moist throughout the germination period. The recommended seeding rate is 80 grams per acre, requiring a seedbed area of around 80 square meters. **Seedling Management** Protect the seedbed from intense sunlight by using shade nets or grass canopies over the beds. This helps keep the environment cool and moist. The shade net can be adjusted to a height of about 40 cm for proper air circulation. From the time of sowing until the end of August, the seedlings should remain under shade. On cloudy days, you can open the shade nets earlier and later in the day. By August, the shade nets can be removed. During the transplanting stage, make sure the soil remains moist. In case of rain, cover the seedlings with a plastic film to prevent damage. Before the heart and leaves emerge, gently thin out the seedlings to promote root development and manage watering based on soil dryness. When the seedlings have 4–5 true leaves, their growth accelerates, so more attention is needed. During summer, frequent watering is essential to lower the ground temperature. Water every 2–3 days, preferably in the morning or evening. **Weeding and Pest Control** To prevent weed competition, apply herbicides two days after sowing. Use 120–150 grams of herbicide per acre, mixed with 75 kg of water, and spray it evenly over the seedbed. This will help keep the area clean and reduce the need for manual weeding.
