Causes of grape rotten fruit and its prevention methods

Last year, when we planted grapes, a significant portion of our vineyards suffered from severe fruit rot. As the disease spread, many growers turned to heavy applications of fungicides in an attempt to control it, but the results were disappointing, leading to major losses for grape farmers. This raised an important question: what caused the fruit rot, and how can it be prevented? One of the main causes is environmental conditions. For example, excessive rainfall and high humidity create ideal conditions for diseases like downy mildew, white rot, and gray mold. These pathogens thrive in wet environments, and during rainy seasons, their occurrence increases significantly, resulting in widespread fruit rot. Another factor is poor vineyard management. Overly dense foliage and overcrowded clusters reduce air circulation and sunlight penetration, creating a perfect environment for pests and diseases to flourish. This lack of ventilation not only increases the risk of infection but also makes it harder to detect early signs of problems. Nutritional imbalance is also a key contributor. If the soil lacks essential nutrients—especially phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients—it weakens the plants' natural defenses. Excessive nitrogen can worsen the situation by promoting soft growth that's more susceptible to pests and diseases, ultimately leading to fruit rot. To address these issues, several effective control methods can be implemented: First, selecting disease-resistant grape varieties is crucial. Varieties such as "Kantai" are known for their strong resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, while others like the giant peak type offer good protection against black rot and anthracnose. Second, adopting a preventive approach is essential. Regular monitoring and timely application of fungicides at the first sign of disease can make a big difference. For example, spraying with 50% Triflumuron WP diluted 500 times, 70% Thiophanate-Methyl WP at 600 times, or 50% Carbendazim wettable powder at 800 times can help manage fungal infections effectively. Spraying should be repeated every 7–10 days, depending on the severity, and extra treatments may be needed after heavy rains. For pest control, insecticides like imidacloprid (2000–3000 times dilution) can manage thrips and leafhoppers, while cypermethrin or avermectin can be used to control grape tiger moths. Another useful practice is fruit bagging. By covering the grape clusters with protective bags shortly after fruit set, you can reduce pest damage and prevent cracking and rotting. It’s important to apply a disinfecting insecticide before bagging and to remove the bags 1–2 weeks before harvest to allow proper color development. Summer pruning also plays a vital role in preventing fruit rot. Timely removal of excess shoots and leggy branches improves light and air circulation. Proper pruning techniques, such as retaining only one strong shoot per node and pinching off the upper leaves before flowering, help balance vegetative and reproductive growth, ensuring better yields and healthier fruit. Finally, soil testing and balanced fertilization are key to long-term success. Applying organic compost in the fall and using targeted fertilizers based on soil test results in spring and summer helps improve soil structure, nutrient availability, and root health, making the vines more resilient to diseases and pests. By combining these strategies, grape growers can significantly reduce the risk of fruit rot and achieve healthier, higher-quality harvests.
