Periwinkle
Vinca, commonly known as the "Day's Spring," is a flowering plant that blooms daily throughout the year. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, it is an evergreen, upright subshrub with a height ranging from 30 to 60 cm. The leaves are opposite, long and oval-shaped, with a dark green color and a subtle lighter hue. The flowers grow in the axils of the leaves, featuring a salverform corolla with five lobes arranged in a ring. Each flower measures about 3 to 4 cm in diameter and comes in colors such as white, pink, or purplish red.
One unique characteristic of Vinca is that at the tip of each tender shoot, two flowers appear between every pair of leaves. This special growth pattern results in a long and continuous blooming period, making it highly ornamental. Its flowers remain vibrant and full throughout the season, from spring all the way to autumn, earning it the nickname "Sun, Spring, and Everlasting Bloom."
Native to the West Indies, Vinca was introduced to China as early as the Song Dynasty. It thrives in warm and humid conditions and can tolerate partial shade. Propagation is typically done through sowing.
Beyond its ornamental value, Vinca is also valued for its medicinal properties, particularly in cancer prevention. Modern scientific research has identified over 55 types of alkaloids in the flowers of Vinca. Among these, vinblastine and vincristine have shown significant effectiveness in treating various malignant tumors, including choriocarcinoma, lymphosarcoma, and childhood acute leukemia. These compounds are currently among the most widely used anticancer agents worldwide, highlighting the plant’s importance in both horticulture and medicine.
