Cycads, also known as Tieshu trees, are ancient and resilient plants with sturdy, tall trunks and high aesthetic value. Not only are they visually appealing, but their leaves, roots, and fruits also have medicinal properties, used for detoxification, pain relief, and reducing pressure in the lungs. Due to their limited availability in the market, cycads are often expensive and hard to find.
Cycas saccharomyces, a common species of cycad, can be propagated through sowing or by division. However, due to the limitations of axillary buds, the tillering method is not commonly practiced in home settings. As a result, most people opt for seed sowing. Sowing is typically done during the summer and autumn months when the weather is warm and favorable for germination.
To start the process, select large, uniform seeds and remove the outer shell. Wash them thoroughly with clean water, then disinfect them in a 0.3% potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes. Afterward, dry the seeds carefully before planting.
For planting, use a pot with a layer of gravel or coarse sand at the bottom to ensure good drainage. Cover it with a mix of nutrient-rich soil and fine sand. Place the seeds flat on the surface and keep the soil consistently moist. At an ideal temperature of around 32°C, the seeds should begin to sprout within about two weeks.
During the growth phase, it's important to regularly apply a diluted castor oil liquid fertilizer. Adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the mixture will help maintain the vibrant green color of the leaves. In summer, water more frequently, while in winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot. When temperatures drop too low, move the plant indoors. Before and after Qingming (a traditional Chinese festival), bring it back outside. Repot every 2–3 years to ensure healthy growth and proper nutrition.
