Packaging machine environmental protection

Equipment manufacturers are eager to use the "Eco" label on the name of the new device. In the eyes of some consumers, this label means “environmental protection”, while for other consumers it means “economic”. Many people believe that it has two meanings.

Cheap or environmentally friendly machines are always more attractive. However, even machines that are perfect in terms of environmental protection or cost savings can sometimes be flawed.

In the spring of 2008, KHS introduced the Eco-shrinktunnel heat shrink packaging machine. This unique environmentally friendly equipment is mainly based on natural gas supplied by the main line and is not conventional electricity. Werner Ageling, a product of KHS's Packaging Machinery division, explains: “The use of natural gas means that in certain markets where electricity costs are high, such as Germany and the UK, users using Eco-shrintunnel will save a lot of money, while other heat shrink packaging machines per The hourly power consumption is up to 100 kW."

Power saving is only one aspect. It is generally believed that natural gas produces less carbon than a power line. Natural gas can be burned directly, while power generation and power consumption involve multiple energy conversions. KHS claims that the carbon produced by electric heating is “much more” than the combustion of gases.

Despite this, the difference in the way power is generated still means that the environmental and cost conditions are different in the same system in different countries. As Werner Ageling said, French companies typically use low-carbon nuclear energy, so KHS gas-driven technology is not very popular locally, both from an environmental and economic perspective. It is worth mentioning that, so far, a large brewing plant in the UK has installed KHS's three-machine heat shrinking system, and orders from Germany and Austria have been delivered – these countries have higher electricity costs. .

The KHS system also uses an innovative approach to energy generation to improve its environmental performance. The Eco-shrinktunnel heat shrink system uses porous water infiltration technology instead of traditional gas equipment.

“This is a new packaging technology,” says Werner Ageling, a product at KHS's Packaging Machinery division. “It has an advantage. You don't need an exhaust or supplemental gas source because the system does not emit carbon dioxide.”

Saving electricity

In order to reduce the power consumption of some shrinking machines as a whole, Sealed Air has taken a series of important measures. For example, in the second half of last year, the company's Shanklin GT71 shrinking machine used a small power heater, and the insulation layer of the heater was improved to make the heat loss small.

Helios Ruiz, director of European marketing for Sealed Air's shrink packaging division, stressed that “the machine itself does not explain anything, but the combination of the machine and the film is different.” All the savings are dependent on this combination, because it has a double advantage. Naturally, it has become an important part of Sealed Air's business.

Therefore, when KHS emphasized that its environmentally-friendly heat shrink packaging machine has the same output power as a standard heat shrink packaging machine, Sealed Air can already talk about their reduced power. The Shanklin GT71 shrink machine also provides users with a low temperature shrink film for the GT71 shrink machine, and the quality and performance of the product has never been affected by reduced power.

Sealed Air has adopted a systematic approach. They believe that the cost savings of shrinking machines are only part of the overall cost measure, and more importantly, logistics savings. Helios Ruiz believes: “If you use a thicker film, customers can waste 30% to 40% of the pallet space, so our machines and film sales are based on overall cost savings.”

Of course, Helios Ruiz did not ignore the importance of cutting power consumption. “Energy conservation is just one of the 10 advantages that such a system might offer, but in countries such as the UK and Italy, the cost savings are not small,” Ruiz said. “However, I still expect someone to be able to Focus on the GT71 shrink machine from a continuous perspective."

Although people rely heavily on the shrinkage properties of the films they use, when it comes to potential savings, people always think that heating machines with higher energy efficiency can play an immediate role. Consider other solutions? For example, those packaging processes that consume less energy? Are people still arguing over technologies that have little value and character?

Some equipment manufacturers, such as llapak and pallet seal specialist Proseal, use their heating processes to solve energy problems. Rick Carless, Proseal's product sales engineer, highlights the company's advantages in Hot Rod products. Hot Rod is an alternative to traditional ceramic pad heating technology. Rick Carless believes: "Our system does not heat the entire surface of the tray, it is located above the edge of the tray so that heat can be locked in the sealed area."

While this innovation can save 25% of energy, Rick Carless said the company is about to introduce a new type of pallet sealer that can reduce power consumption by 60%. This is a very amazing number. So far, the company has delivered 10 such machines to users.

As for the gas system used by KHS, Rick Carless explained: "At present, this technology has been widely used in other industries, but does not include the packaging industry."

At the same time, the tray sealer and vacuum packaging specialist Multivac said: "In terms of thermal shaping, energy efficiency is not an important thing for Zui - at least for the company's four equipment experts.

Marketing Andrew Stark explains: “We are all looking for opportunities to improve the overall operational efficiency of any one plant, but as long as we make great efforts, we can always improve efficiency.”

Water cooling is a good example. Andrew Stark believes: “We can install a closed loop system on the water cooler. If you don't have a closed loop system, you can dissipate the heat or drain the hot water. A truly visionary company may go further and use heat exchange. To generate energy."

Undoubtedly, such companies have emerged and they expect to be able to save significant energy. These companies believe that cost is not the only reason for change, especially those companies that are large and have strong capabilities. Multinational companies that ignore corporate social responsibility will certainly suffer from it.

One small step

One might argue that Stark's analysis is that he only emphasizes the big achievements in energy. In fact, the greater the amount of packaging operation, the greater the impact of a small new design on the overall.

Encoding equipment may not be an important goal of energy savings. Since Pepsi's global packaging lines (especially vertical FFS equipment for potato chips and snack packaging) have used more than 2,000 Markem-Imaje SmartDate encoders, the company has realized that they will save a lot of money.

Markem-Imaje really lived up to expectations. The company has developed a power-saving automatic sleep mode for its thermal transfer encoder products. According to the supplier, this model reduces power consumption by half. As long as the packaging machine stops running, each encoder can be converted to sleep mode. Since last year, the system has been used in all new Markem-Imaje SmartDate units and can be further improved for use with older equipment.

When introducing new technology, Martin Miller, UK engineering director at PepsiCo, said: "Although each encoder does not save much electricity, it does not save much, which will help us achieve our overall goals."

To date, innovations in energy-efficient packaging equipment have just begun. Things have always been the case, the pressure of change always comes from the big companies that need more. Undoubtedly, once redesigned equipment is widely used, more SMEs can move toward energy-efficient machines – reducing weight and reducing size.

Product change

Coincidentally, the sealing machine equipment supplier llapak also attaches great importance to the environmental and economic benefits of its new system, especially its Carrera 4000 Eco products. Mike Butler, sales director for the horizontal sealer business, explained that the energy-saving features run through llapak's overall sealing system and motor. Specifically, the drive enables the energy recovery system to function. Llapak said that the sealing system can be heated in only 5 to 10 minutes, while the shaft is still cool and the temperature of the clamping device only rises to around 160 degrees Celsius.

Mike Butler believes that increasing pressure is forcing manufacturers and packaging companies to look for more energy efficient equipment, not just to reduce costs. Retailers are increasingly recognizing that in-store energy consumption is just one of the growing energy bills. Mike Butler said: "We know that supermarkets also want suppliers to reduce carbon emissions." But is the marketing strategy risk of making machines environmentally responsible more than technical risks? “The 'environmental' approach is a bit like a cosmetic,” says Butler. “But this kind of equipment does bring real savings. For example, for the Carrera 4000 Eco, it takes only a short time for the machine to warm up. Is an important advantage."
