The first ornamental fish - guppies

The guppies, also known as rainbow fish, millions of fish, and anchovies, belong to the flower family, ovary, and are native to Venezuela, Guyana, and the West Indies. Because it is petite, colorful, beautiful, and strong breeding power, easy to raise, so loved and welcomed by ornamental fish lovers, and even some people call it "the first ornamental fish."

First, the morphological characteristics

The guppies are petite in shape, with colorful patterns on their bodies, some shaped like letters, and foreign peacocks; some resembling serpentine, called snake peacock; some like leopard skin, leopard tail peacock, and so on. The size and color of male and female fishes differ greatly. The male body is thin, with a body length of 3-4 cm, a long dorsal fin, a wide and long tail fin, which accounts for more than 1/2 of the total length. The length of the tail shank is greater than the height of the tail shank. The colors of the body, dorsal fin and caudal fin are colorful, mainly red, blue, black, yellow, green, tiger skin color and noise. There are blue and red round spots on the caudal fins and the body belly, and there are pale patterns around them, which resembles the peacock tails. The female body is thick and has a body length of about 7 cm. It is pale and flesh-colored. It is slightly transparent. The color of the dorsal fin and caudal fin is much less than that of the male fish. Most of them are single silver gray. Although there are some patterns on the tail fin, Without the bright color of males, the fins of females are shorter than males, and their body length is about twice that of males. The back side of the guppies is flat and has various shapes and beautiful tails. According to the shape of its tail fins, it can be divided into the upper sword tail, the lower sword tail, the double sword tail, the tail, the tail, the round tail, the flag tail, and the fan tail. , triangle tail, tail, long tail, tail, tail and other varieties. Crossbreeding between breeds has produced a variety of descendants, so despite a wide variety of guppies, it is difficult to find two exactly the same guppies, which is exactly where the charm of guppies.

Second, the breeding method

The guppies have a very strong reproductive ability, do not require special environmental conditions, and can breed throughout the year. The guppies are ovary-producing fish, and they directly produce small fish. Sexual maturation is early. Juveniles will enter the mature period after 3-4 months of feeding and they can breed offspring. Sooner or later, sexual maturity is closely related to water temperature and feeding conditions.

The genitals of sexually mature male guppies are pointed-shaped exchangers. The sign of sexual maturity in females is that there is a black spot on the anterior part of the anal fin, and the darker the color of the spot, the closer to the perinatal period.

When breeding, a larger aquarium should be selected. The water temperature is maintained at 26°C and the pH is 7.2-7.4. It is best to plant some plants in the tank and then arrange male and female broodstock in a 1:4 ratio. When the broodstock is in estrus, the male fish continuously chases the female fish. When the male fish's exchanger is inserted into the female fish's excretory hole, the sperm is discharged and the female fish is fertilized. When the female's placental spot becomes large and dark and the anus is prominent, it indicates that the female is about to calve, and it can be removed and put into a calving box in another aquarium. Immediately after production, the female fish is to be removed, or a funnel is used to surround the wall with a plastic film. The upper mouth is fixed on the water, the lower mouth is immersed in water, and the female fish is placed in the funnel so that the larvae can be produced from the funnel. The small hole enters the water outside the funnel. A female fish can produce 10-80 larvae at a time and produce calves many times a year. The interval between two calvings is about 1 month. Therefore, the reproductive cycle is very short and the number is quite large, so it is called "million fish." However, the life of guppies is very short, generally only 2-3 years.

Third, larvae rearing. When larvae are born, they can swim and feed freely. At this time, they can be fed by hand. There are a variety of foods that are fed, and the abundance of insects, flakes fed into the scraps, and the egg-yolk pulp are all palatable feeds for small fish. Regardless of what kind of food, we must follow a small number of times the principle. After the feeding is completed, it is better to remove the leftover bait in time and it is better to replace some of the water. General larvae can distinguish between male and female after 3-4 weeks of birth. Prior to this, high-protein diets should be used as the main food. After 2 months, the baits should be prepared with good meat and vegetables to prevent unbalanced nutrition and affect the development of broodstock.
