Definition of health food

Health foods are foods that “show” that they have specific health functions. That is suitable for a specific group of people to eat, may have the function of regulating the body, not to treat diseases for the purpose of food.

Health food labels and instructions must comply with the relevant national standards and requirements, and indicate the following:

(i) Health care and suitable population;

(ii) Methods of eating and suitable amounts for consumption;

(c) Storage methods;

(d) Names and contents of functional ingredients. If the functional ingredients cannot be clearly defined under the conditions of the existing technology, the name of the raw material related to the health care function must be indicated;

(5) Health food approval number;

(6) Signs of health foods;

(7) The contents of other labels stipulated by relevant standards or requirements.

The names of health foods should be accurate and scientific. They must not use names, place names, code names and exaggerated easily misunderstood names, and must not use names of non-essential functional ingredients in products.

The labels, instructions and advertising content of health food products must be authentic and meet the quality requirements of their products, and there must be no propaganda suggesting that the disease can be cured.

To apply for the "Health Food Approval Certificate", the following materials must be submitted:

(a) Health Food Application Form;

(b) Formulas, production processes and quality standards of health foods;

(3) Toxicological safety evaluation report;

(d) health care function evaluation report;

(5) List of functional ingredients of health foods, qualitative and/or quantitative test methods for efficacy components, and stability test reports. If the functional ingredients cannot be identified under the current technology conditions, a list of the main raw materials related to the health care function in the food must be submitted;

(6) samples of the product and its hygiene inspection report;

(7) Labels and instructions (for review);

(8) relevant domestic and foreign data;

(9) Other materials that should be submitted in accordance with relevant regulations or product characteristics.

When applying for the production of health food, the following information must be submitted:

(1) Health license for the production and operation of valid foods issued by the health administrative department with direct jurisdiction;

(2) The original or copy of the "Health Food Approval Certificate";

(3) Standards of health food enterprises formulated by production enterprises, hygiene specifications of production enterprises and formulation instructions;

(4) For technology transfer or cooperative production, a valid contract for technology transfer or cooperative production signed with the holder of the "Health Food Approval Certificate" shall be submitted;

(5) Introduction of production conditions, production technicians, and quality assurance systems;

(6) Quality and sanitation inspection reports for three batches of products.

The approval of health foods does not require large-scale efficacy or adverse reaction verification results. Unlike drugs, there are mainly no side effects.
